Can Washington mend fences with Latin America?

 | On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had a private dinner with at least six former presidents of Latin American countries. The aim she had in mind was obvious – to mend relations with a region that was by and large ignored by the previous administration, and to a great extent, by the current one as well.It is well known that George W. Bush concentrated all his foreign policy efforts in only one direction – the Middle East. The results are also well known – Israel and Palestine are farther from getting on mutually acceptable terms than they had been any time before. Iraq is totally devastated and the return to normalcy seems to be a matter of the very distant future. Iran is building up muscles in its nuclear program, Afghanistan has sky-rocketed the production of opium-related drugs, and the staunchest ally in the region, Pakistan, is ready to turn into a major headache of the US.
